Your Pet's Surgery at Forest Glade Animal Hospital

In order to answer your questions and ease your concerns, the following information and slideshow will explain the level of care that we offer. 

​

On the morning of your pet's surgery, we will ask that you drop off your pet at a scheduled time between 8am-9am.  Your Veterinarian will then order some pre-anesthetic blood work in order to perform a minimum data base of tests. This allows us to check for anemia, kidney and liver functions and to ensure blood sugar/protein levels are within normal ranges. The Veterinarian will then perform a pre-anesthetic exam to detect any abnormalities. You will be informed if there are any findings and if other tests are required.

Your pet will be sedated in order to reduce anxiety and help reduce pain during surgery. They are placed on intravenous fluids which helps maintain normal blood pressure while under anesthetic. Your veterinarian will select the most appropriate combination of medications that is most appropriate for your pets' health and life stage.

Once under anesthetic, your pet is monitored constantly using a variety of technology, including an ECG, pulse oximetry, Doppler blood pressure monitoring and a breathing monitor. Our skilled and trained Veterinary Technicians perform these tasks under the guidance of our Doctors.

Aspesis (or sterilization procedures), is followed throughout the surgery. This includes, new sterile needles for every injection and sterile instrument packs for every surgery. After a surgical hand scrub, our surgeons enter the surgical suite wearing sterile gowns, sterile gloves, mask and cap for every major surgery. 

 

Asepsis is critical to prevent infections.

Your pet is maintained under anesthetic with gas anesthetics similar to those used in human hospitals. Their body temperature during surgery is maintained by a circulating warm water pad placed under them on the surgery table.​ When surgery is completed, before they wake, they receive more pain medication to ensure a comfortable, stress-free recovery. Once they are awake, we will phone you at your contact number to let you know that everything went well.
